Misaligned in the Night

Cradled by a policeman
choked in frozen tears
like he was holding his own son
the body was washed ashore
after the boat overturned

Caught in a huge tidal wave
conversed in storms
of sailing towards
what they hoped
was a new beginning.

Abandoned by their captain
laced in a wordless warning
disgorged in the night
as the water levels spiralled
higher and higher

in the aftermath of panic
dragging them forward
like creases over pages
dumbfounded into the abyss
within minutes of leaving

Holding each others hands
with a brave face
misaligned in hope
swallowing their dreams
in just a few minutes

Now lost in pieces
on the edge of the water

taunted by nature

mourned by the world.
