Allison Davies

I’d rather be dancing

To be perfectly honest
I’d rather be anywhere but here
I’d rather sit in the shadow of Arghun al-Kamili
teach my daughter her alif bā’tā’
and the right way to eat a fig

before the war
I had a house in Aleppo
I had a blue coat and a child outside
playing in a bright red dress

I’ve had enough of dying,
of jihadis
of drones
of IEDS and Zastavas
so here is where I am
in a boat held together
by a single fragile hope
that those searchlights are beacons
guiding me home
